Adobe Illustrator Tutorial for Beginners: Wacom Tablet using Pencil

Adobe Illustrator for Beginners using the pencil tool and the Wacom tablet. We will use the sketch and width profile guide to assist drawing the character using the pencil tool with our drawing tablet. We will go nice and slow for brand new users of Adobe Illustrator can follow along at home or in the classroom. I do recommend having the tutorial on a 2nd device to prevent toggling back and forth. The second device is also great for question in the comments section if you get stuck.

We will start inking by tracing along using the pencil tool with high smoothing for its fidelity setting. This is an easy to follow strategy to simplify the pencil tool for beginners. We also have the keep selected feature turned on to make joining paths extremely easy. This is also great for sharp corners which will be tough since our smoothing is up so high.

Troubleshooting: If the lines are bouncing or joining when you don’t want them too just go a little bit longer with the strokes. Beginners usually try to make it perfect and place the end point of a selected line. If you like this idea just turn off your keep selected setting.

Hey Jason, superb tutorial. I got a question for you though: Brush(paintbrush or blob brush) vs Pencil? Which one would you use/prefer?
