Why when using the chords other than notes do you only get the choice of playing Em Am F G C Bb etc.. What if the song has a D ?please help!

Is there any way to play dynamic, long bowing actions (see 2:38) and change chords without it cutting off abruptly? I want to use smart strings as an intro to a guitar composition but I can’t if it just cuts off like that. I tried switching really quickly and it doesn’t let me do that. Tips?
